The Wikimedia Foundation hosts Wikipedia, one of the most visited sites on the web, with support from online donations.
In 2012, I was hired by the Wikimedia Foundation to aid in developing a communications campaign that would support these fundraising efforts. For this campaign, I wrote brief but high-impact profiles of dozens of Wikipedia volunteers, helping them describe in their own words their enthusiasm for Wikipedia and its role in their lives. I collaborated with videographers, photographers and web designers to select visual assets to support that storytelling. I traveled to both San Francisco and D.C. to work face-to-face with Wikimedia colleagues and met frequently with our local web design team in Springfield, Missouri.
Wikipedia’s 2012 year-end fundraising drive set a record for its shortest and most successful campaign yet, raising over $35 million from more than two million individual donors.
